Sound to Picture – The Scarecrow

Studying BSc(Hons) Audio and Music Technology at the University of the West of England gave me the opportunity to target my own career path by being able to choose which modules we would like to take. The level three module Audio Post Production was targeted towards the post production of audio in both film and video. One of our assignments was to produce the sound to either a film or video of our own choice. The deliverable was a quicktime video with our own embedded sound.

The chosen video for the assignment was an advertisement for Chipotle Mexican Grill. Its in an animated style and was used originally by Chipotle Mexican Grill as a companion to their new app-based game. As you can see from the source video, there is not much in the way of foley or sound effects, other than the main musical track ‘Pure Imagination’ by Fiona Apple. This gave me plenty of opportunity to add effects and bring the animation to life.

The video posted above is the final version with the included sound effects. The sound effects used were combination of free sound effects from freeSFX as well as from my own recordings and foley, with a few sounds from the BBC sound effects library thrown in for good measure. Producing the track was done using Apple Logic Pro X through the use of multiple audio tracks with automation and other effects such as EQ and reverb. The final track was exported down to stereo track and mastered to a comfortable audio level.
